Overview

Celebrate a unique adventure in Morondava, This week-long itinerary takes you to the west coast of Madagascar between the coastal town of Morondava and the Tsingy de Bemaraha.

Powerful rivers, the Tsiribihina, the Manambolo, flow from the Highlands along the Mozambique Channel. They dug wide furrows that cut through immense limestone plateaus, the Tsingy.

In this beautiful and wide peneplain, the baobab is king, it punctuates the landscape with its slender and massive presence and the Alley of the Baobabs is an excellent representation of it.

Our chaotic trail weaves its way through the middle of this wooded savannah, the red laterite ribbon is simply cut by the two ferries making it possible to cross rivers.

Itinerary:

Day 01: Arrival to Morondava

Meeting with your representative guide and transfer to Antananarivo airport.

We assist you to take the domestic flight to the west of Madagascar.

Your guide welcomes you at Morondava airport. Walk in town to the market and the beach.

We settle in at the hotel facing the sea.

Meals Included: None

Day 02: Morondava to Bekopaka and Belo sur Tsiribihina

Breakfast at the hotel then drive to the village of Bekopaka. It is soon after leaving the city that we cross the famous Alley of the Baobabs. We take the time to linger there and take some beautiful photos.

Continuation for the Tsingy of Bemaraha. The track is sometimes very uncomfortable, but it is this alone that leads to this site classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. We cross the Tsiribihina and Manambolo rivers by ferry. Arrival at the end of the day in the village of Bekopaka.

Meals Included: None

Day 03-Day 04: Tsingy de Bemaraha

This site is one of the most amazing around! The Tsingy are veritable limestone cathedrals, this dense network of faults, crevices and limestone blocks carved into blades is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Madagascar.

The formation of this middle Jurassic massif began 200 million years ago, when the sea still covered this region of Bemaraha. Then this huge patch of corals and seashells rose up. Exposed to the open air for 5 million years, the rain, with its erosion work, has sculpted the rest.

Among these wonders, there are 6 species of lemurs, reptiles and 53 varieties of birds.

It is also the habitat of one of the smallest species of chameleon, Brookesia perarmata.

In the company of guides and porters, these two days are devoted to the discovery of these wonders of nature.

Meals Included: Picnic Lunch

Day 05: Bekopaka to Morondava

We take the track back to Morondava and cross the Manambolo and Tsiribihina rivers by ferry.

These “manipulations” can sometimes take a little time…

It is before arriving at our destination that we cross the famous Alley of the Baobabs. We are there at the right time, the sun is low, the light grazing, the smooth trunks reflect the orange rays of the sun. Superb perspective photos.

We return to town, Morondava, and settle into our hotel by the sea.

Meals Included: None

Day 06: Free Day in Morondava

Morondava is one of those villages far from everything, a little forgotten, crushed under a blazing sun.

The atmosphere here is most peaceful and even the generally bustling market gives off a sense of tranquillity.

After a stroll through the streets of the town, we suggest that you go south on foot to the fishing village of Betania, which you will reach by walking along the beach for an hour.

Free evening at your hotel.

Meals Included: None

Photography: Madagascar is completely different to mainland Africa in every way possible. The major draw card of Madagascar is its wildlife. With some 100,000 species of fauna, the sheer volume of photographic opportunities is mind boggling. Over 100 species of lemur, 300+ species of birds, 260 types of reptiles and 266 amphibian species call this island home. And there’s still more being discovered today—more than 600 new species of wildlife have been recorded since 1999. Just about everything you lay your eyes on in Madagascar exists nowhere else on Earth. In fact, approximately 9% of its reptiles, 89% of its plant life, and 92% of its mammals are completely unique to the island. It’s this sheer volume of biodiversity that provides us photographers with so many opportunities to create images of the wild, strange and rare.

But it’s more than just the wildlife that makes Madagascar so special. The ‘Rainbow Island’, as it’s also known, is home to a wealth of cultural diversity and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. From the capital of Antananarivo to the rural seaside fishing villages of Morondava, there are endless opportunities to take portraits and capture the locals’ unique way of life.

People: Malagasy. The Malagasy (French: Malgache) are an Austronesian ethnic group native to the island country of Madagascar. Traditionally the population have been divided by subgroups (tribes or ethnicities), but the relevance of this subdivision is disputed.

The Malagasy peoples, moreover, do not consider themselves to be Africans, but, because of the continuing bond with France that resulted from former colonial rule, the island developed political, economic, and cultural links with the French-speaking countries of western Africa.

The Malagasy language of Austronesian origin, is generally spoken throughout the island. The official languages of Madagascar are Malagasy and French. Madagascar is a Francophone country, and French is spoken among the educated population of this former French colony

Climate: The climate of Madagascar is subtropical, with a hot and rainy season between November and the end of March (summer), and a cooler dry season from May to October (winter). … The west coast is drier than the east coast, whilst the far south and southwest is a semi-desert region that experiences very little rainfall.

Staying safe on Wildlife Viewing Activities: There are no dangerous animals in Madagascar. Most wildlife viewing is done on foot, so sturdy walking shoes and protective clothing is essential. A walking stick can come in handy as well. All parks and reserves are very safe – all you have to do is follow your guide’s instructions.

Staying safe in Cities and Towns: Most cities in the world see some crime and urban areas in Madagascar are no exception. Most issues are minor, such as petty theft and pickpocketing and you are very unlikely to encounter any trouble on guided activities. When venturing out in cities and towns alone, you should follow a few simple safety precautions: seek advice from your hotel before taking a walk; don’t wear jewellery or other valuables and only take the money you need with you; always take a taxi after dark. Steer clear of any protests, demonstrations or political gatherings which can turn violent quickly.
